Questions about Austin online
Short, straight answers on the tags, the communities, the murals, and what this site is and isn't.
What is Austin Tweet?
Austin Tweet is an independent field guide to how Austin, Texas talks about itself online — the hashtags and shorthand, the neighborhood threads and group chats, the murals the city photographs, and the running jokes and arguments that loop through the feed. It's editorial, written in our own words.
Is this a list of Austin accounts to follow?
No. Austin Tweet is not a directory of handles and not a ranking of influencers. We describe communities and patterns rather than telling you who to follow — who's worth following is personal and changes constantly.
What does #ATX mean?
#ATX is the everyday shorthand for Austin. (AUS is the airport code; ATX is the informal one the city adopted for itself.) You'll see it on event posts, neighborhood gripes, and sunset photos alike. #KeepAustinWeird and #SXSW are two more you'll run into constantly.
Where does the conversation actually happen?
In three overlapping places: neighborhood threads, where the day-to-day business and venting happens; private group chats and servers, where the real recommendations get traded; and the public feeds, which show the city's highlight reel to the world. Most of the genuinely useful stuff is semi-private.
Which murals does everyone photograph?
The "i love you so much" mural on South Congress is the most-posted, but the lineup rotates as murals come and go. The common thread is that a wall becomes a ritual: you stand in front of it, you post it, you've been to Austin.
Who publishes Austin Tweet?
Austin Tweet is published by the WholeTech Network, an independent Austin, Texas publisher building websites since 1996. The content is free — no paywall, no mandatory signup.
